Piscasaw Gardens

Jennifer Kinney

IMG_4847_picmonkeyed

With farming in her blood, Jennifer Kinney and her husband decided several years ago to try their hand at growing vegetables and flowers.  They soon found out that vegetables were not going to be their future but Jennifer discovered a love for growing flowers! Piscasaw Gardens, named for Piscasaw Creek which runs through her family farm, has grown over the years and is a testament to Jennifer’s hard work and love of flowers.

After working out an agreement with Twin Gardens in Harvard, Jennifer was able to turn a once, undesirable plot of land on their property into one that blooms with color!  She grows her flowers at Twin Gardens as well as on a little over an acre of land that she owns in town which is primarily used for her perennials.  After many years of growing and researching flower varieties, Jennifer has determined the varieties that she loves to grow and are enjoyed by her customers.

flower experiment

Although she has her favorites, Jennifer is always experimenting with new varieties to bring to market.  She uses a hoop house for her experiments and right now she is working with carnations.  This past spring Jennifer rented greenhouse space at Woodstock Farmers Market vendor Rich Brook’s farm for her seed starts. This allowed her to get a jump start on her growing season.

flowers in the cooler

Jennifer relies on helpers to pick the flowers prior to the market. Starting just before dawn, large quantities are picked and kept in coolers until they are delivered to the market.  Jennifer provides flowers for several markets but the Woodstock Farmers Market is her largest.

rows of flowers

Jennifer grows annuals and perennials and even looks for wildflowers such as Queen Anne’s Lace and Goldenrod.  Growing over 75 varieties, she focuses on customer favorites such as Zinnias, Snapdragons and Lisianthus.  She also grows Sunflowers, Strawflowers, Amaranth, Asclepias (a cousin of milkweed) and many other varieties that can be used as add-ins in bouquets.  Although we did not visit her perennial garden, it is where you can find her peonies, lilacs and lilies.

flowers at market

Piscasaw Gardens is a favorite of market-goers at the Woodstock Farmers Market!  You can find Jennifer and her helpers at the market making beautiful bouquets that customers can buy pre-made, but you will find many market-goers enjoying the make-your-own option!  It has become a Tuesday or Saturday morning ritual for some and with the ever changing palette of colors and flowers the end result will be different but always beautiful!

Want to come make a bouquet of your own?  Check out these happy market-goers: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzcG7K8XtPnZWHRTVk1ocmNCdWs

Van Laar’s Fruit Farm

“WHERE QUALITY RIPENS”

IMG_3023

Julie and Brian Van Laar’s dream of creating a family fruit farm began twelve years ago when they decided to move from their suburban home in Lisle to 40 acres in Capron, IL.  Their vision has always been to grow the farm for their children to take over one day.  Along with their five children, Jonathan, Katelyn, Sarah, Rachel and David, the Van Laar’s focus on sustainable practices when growing their fruits and vegetables.  The family uses non-gmo seeds to grow strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, apples, sweet corn, tomatoes, green & yellow beans and a hard red winter wheat which they take to an artisan grinder.   The family focuses on a diversification of crops in order to maintain a sustainable farm.  The Van Laar’s also raise chickens on pasture and sell the eggs at farmers markets.

straw_rasp

June is strawberry season and a really busy time on the farm!  For about four weeks you will find the family in one of the three strawberry patches which cover three acres of their property.  They pick over a 1,000 quarts a week for several, local farmers markets and restaurants.  Raspberry season follows soon after and the family switches over to picking raspberries.  They recently completed building a high tunnel to protect the raspberry plants from bugs.

apple trees

The Van Laar’s began growing apple, pear and peach trees back in 2004.  The fruit farm now has about 4500 apple trees, 500 peach trees and 100 pear trees.  They rely on the European method using a trellis and pruning like a vine which allows for more sun and a sweeter final product.  They will begin picking Zestar apples in August followed by Gala in September.  During harvest time the family relies on seasonal help from local youth to help with picking.

farm helpers

The Van Laar’s farming practices focus on mostly organic, eco-friendly methods. Crop rotation, cover crops and natural pest control in the form of free-range chickens are some of the strategies that the family rely on.  A poly-wog pond on their property ensures that there will be plenty of frogs to help control pests in the strawberry fields.  The Van Laar’s have 16 hives on their property which produce the honey they sell as well as pollinate their fruit trees. The family uses organic based compounds for fertilizer and pest management, however, they will use a chemical counterpart if there is a bad pest problem.  The Van Laar’s continually learn about new farming methods from other farmers as well as through classes at universities such as Cornell and Michigan State University.

cider house

The Van Laar’s farm is always evolving and in 2014 they built a cider house to produce their unpasteurized cider which they sell at farmers markets.  The building also houses a farm kitchen and they were just recently approved to produce and sell jams (coming soon to farmers markets!).  Julie and Brian help to cultivate the different interests of their children.  While some have a passion for growing veggies and wheat, others have interests geared towards prepared foods such as jams and pastries.  With more ideas on the horizon the Van Laar’s continue to grow their family farm business for future generations.

You can visit the Van Laar’s booth at the Woodstock Farmers Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays on the Woodstock Square, May – October and then on scheduled Saturdays at the McHenry County Fairgrounds, November – April.

Tom’s Backyard Garden

Fruits & Vegetables grown naturally in Marengo, IL

IMG_5272_picmonkeyed

Tom Anderson has taken his hobby of gardening to a whole new level!  Taking over the family garden at the age of 10, Tom soon found that he had a talent and passion for gardening.  He was a suburban gardener for 34 years in Palatine where he grew fruit and vegetables in his backyard.  A few years ago he found himself running out of room, so he decided to take early retirement and he and his wife Nancy bought 10 acres in Marengo.  Tom has been selling at farmers markets for the last six years. He got his start at the Palatine market and then began selling at the Woodstock Farmers Market winter market.  This year marks his first as a vendor at the summer market.  You can find him on the Woodstock Square every Saturday from 8 am – 1 pm, May – October.

TBG_outdoor crops

After visiting his property, you can see that Tom is happy to have a much larger space! He has filled it with tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, spinach, onions, radishes, potatoes, carrots, celery, broccoli, leeks, cucumbers, beets, beans, brussel sprouts, garlic, rhubarb, asparagus and corn.  And those are just the veggies!  Tom also grafts his own apple and pear trees and grows raspberries and strawberries.

TBG_hoop house

Tom was able to extend his growing season after his son Phil built a large hoop house.  The hoop house allows him to plant tomatoes much earlier and even though it is only the middle of May, his plants are already starting to bear fruit.  Using the hoop house, gave Tom the ability to grow spinach, kale and carrots all winter long.  You can check out a video tour of the hoop house here https://youtu.be/4VQDBoNpK08

TBG_methods

Tom grows his vegetables and fruits pesticide free.  He relies on farming methods such as using leaves, that he gets from the Village of Marengo, which help keep moisture in, keep the weeds down and help feed the plants.  He has also planted buckwheat to put green matter into the soil and help smother weeds.  For pest control, he relies on hand picking off pests and has found from years of experience that after keeping up with it, eventually everything is in harmony and the pests become few and far between.  To water his crops, it is done by hand or by using a traveling Micro Rain sprinkler.  His neighbor has recently offered to water Tom’s crops with his irrigation system.

TBG_farm equipmentTom, who used to be a seed tester, starts seeds in trays in his basement which he puts on shelves under lights.  Beginning in January, he starts seeds every two weeks planting 800-1000 seeds at a time.  Tom is always looking for the best tasting varieties and saving his seeds has helped him to continue to grow the best of the best. Tom’s son, Phil, who works on the farm, uses his mechanic skills to refurbish tractors and other equipment. You can also find Phil helping his dad at the booth on Saturday at the market.

Soup beans!  Tom starting growing soup beans five years ago and he now grows 28 varieties.  This truly is a labor of love as Tom hand shells the beans, spreads them out on tables in his basement and goes bean by bean pulling out the bad ones.  He then puts them all into a big bin and mixes them up.  You can find his fantastic soup bean mix along with his wife Nancy’s crockpot soup recipe at the Saturday Woodstock Farmers Market.
