Woodstock Farmers Market Best in Class: American Farmland Trust’s Farmers Market Celebration

The Woodstock Farmers Market was happy to be rated as a best in class farmers market during the American Farmland Trust’s Farmers Market Celebration!

Woodstock Farmers Market national rankings are: 

  • People’s Choice: 53rd Nationwide, 4th Illinois

  • Healthy Food for All: 52nd Nationwide, 4th Illinois

Woodstock, IL, September 22, 2016–This week marked the end of American Farmland Trust’s summer-long Farmers Market Celebration – an annual effort to rally support for local farms and family farmers by calling on shoppers to identify the best of America’s farmers markets and Woodstock Farmers Market was rated top 50 best in class nationwide.

“Farmers markets are critical for new and beginning farmers,” says Susan Sink, American Farmland Trust’s Vice President of Development and External Relations. “Next generation farmers selling directly to consumers at farmers markets have nearly a 10 percent greater chance of staying in business than those selling goods through traditional retail. And when family farmers thrive – our community, economy and families thrive.”

This year’s Celebration encouraged market customers, family farmers, community members – anyone who believed they had the best farmers market in the country – to endorse their market in four unique areas: Focus on Farmers, Healthy Food for All, Pillar of the Community and Champion for the Environment.

Winter Market starts Saturday, October 29th!

The Summer Market continues to be on the Woodstock Square on Tuesdays and Saturdays through October 25th. Our great vendors are still bringing plenty of veggies and fruits!  Tomatoes will be winding down in the next week or so but many different types of squash, turnips, mushrooms, kale, cabbage, potatoes, apples, pears, raspberries and much, much more are filling our vendors’ tables.

Of course you can also get quality meat, eggs and cheese as well as packaged food items like great tasting sauces, pickled items, popcorn, real Vermont maple syrup, honey, jams, bakery items and granola.  Don’t forget about our non-food vendors offering great products such as handmade soaps, wool items, pottery, fall plants and knife sharpening.

This great selection of products will continue into our indoor Winter Market which begins Saturday, October 29th! Almost all of our vendors will be joining us during the Winter Market along with some new vendors.  Some new items that you will find at the indoor market are frozen, wild Alaskan seafood, Greek extra virgin olive oil and aquaponic produce. The market will be held once again at the McHenry County Fairgrounds in Building D from 9 am to 1 pm on select Saturdays.

Summer Concert & Raffle Fundraiser

The Woodstock Farmers Market is having a Raffle Fundraiser and Summer Concert to benefit the market’s Link Plus Program.  Market goers can buy raffle tickets at the Tuesday and Saturday markets from July 19th – August 6th.  Raffle tickets can also be purchased at the July 30th concert featuring the Georgia Rae Family Band.

Prizes would not have been made possible without the generous support of our vendors!  There are four prize levels and winners will be announced at the market on August 6th at 12 pm.

Woodstock Farmers Market receives funding from Link Up Illinois

The Woodstock Farmers Market is pleased to announce it has been awarded funding from Link Up Illinois to start a double coupon program for Link customers at our market.  The program is administered by the Experimental Station in Chicago and the funding comes from the United States Department of Agriculture.

SNAP (LINK in Illinois) shoppers can now receive a 1:1 match of Double Coupons for purchases of SNAP-approved produce, essentially doubling their buying power at our market.

We will be able to match up to $25 in coupons (once per market) giving LINK card users a boost to their purchasing power when they use their SNAP benefits. Only fruits and vegetables may be purchased with the double value coupons.

This program LINK-Up-logo-transparent-bg-tagged-384widemakes the fresh and healthy foods sold at our market more affordable for Illinois’ most vulnerable population and will increase sales at our market, helping our local economy and farmers.

The Woodstock Farmers Market is a producers only market held every Tuesday and Saturday on the Woodstock Square from 8 am – 1 pm, May – October.   In the months of November – April, the market moves indoors to the McHenry County Fairgrounds on select Saturdays.
